Yamaha RX100 – 90’s bike relaunch with dhakad look and more mileage

Yamaha RX100: If there’s one bike that still makes desi hearts race a couple of decades after it ruled the roost, that as the Yamaha RX100.

The RX100, when it was launched in the mid-1980s, was not just another two-wheeler, it was a cultural tsunami.

Famed for its brutal acceleration, snarling two-stroke sound and minimal weight, the bike instantly achieved cult status.

There are still some enthusiasts restoring and running this pocket rocket in Indian streets even today.

Today, with rumors of a new re-introduction on the horizon, the RX100 has earned another moment in the limelight. So why exactly was this bike such a cultural touchstone — and what would a 2025 reboot even look like?

A Glimpse into History

The first Yamaha RX100 appeared on Indian streets in 1985 and quickly became the object of many affection.

Constructed around an engine with the smoothness of a rev-hungry straight razor, a 98cc two-stroke which, as an official 11 bhp unit, sounded far less than it felt, because no matter how fast (or how slow) we made the Suzuki go, it managed to underwhelm the ears.

The result? The 100cc that could shame bigger bikes at the lights with a 0–60km/h time of well under 7 seconds.

Its simple architecture, slick transmission, and perky demeanor were ideal for weekday commuting and weekend blasting.

And that fabled exhaust note? Unmistakable. It was more than a bike; it was a vibe.

Why the RX100 Still Lives On

The RX100’s real calling card was how it combined simplicity with soul.

There was no electronic flash or any type of fuel injection, not even a disc brake. But what it did have was unprocessed mechanical character.

Riders connected with it. They felt every rev, every shift, every little vibration in the bars.

And while emission norms became more and more stringent and the two-stroke film soon ran out, the RX100 didn’t entirely lose its fan following.

Restorations thrived, aftermarket parts started selling like hotcakes, and if you looked hard enough; or not all, you wouldn’t grandly judge me of accusing the pollution-filled streets of the city of Chennai, just to have a glimpse of one that was roaming for what looked like free – the RX100 had been transformed, silently, into a living legend, possibly one of the most cherished bikes that India has ever seen.

The 2025 Revival: Everything We Know So Far

We could also see the return of the RX100 name in India Yamaha said. But don’t hold out for a carbon copy of the first one.

Today, when we have such stringent BS6 Phase 2 norms, it shouldn’t be possible for a two-stroke engine to exist.

He, the RX100 is expected to come with a new 125cc or 150cc engine, likely packing in all the go-green updates as well such as much better fuel efficiency, cleaner emissions and updated tech like ABS, fuel injection and maybe even a digital cluster.

Expect the retro styling cues to carry over, including round headlamps, flat seat and that iconic upright stance.

But under the fairing, it will be a different animal — leaner, greener, and tailored to the sensibilities of today’s rider. Still, if Yamaha nails the exhaust note even half as good, the nostalgia wave could be huge.

Yamaha RX100: Final Thoughts

The Yamaha RX100 is not just about a machine, it means million memories for many. It was a time when biking was pure, raw and unfiltered.

And in a world of tech-heavy models and copycats, the RX100’s simplicity and personality remain among the few with character.

Whether you’re an ol’ cheetah like me, harking back to your first ride or a Woke Colonizing Gen Z member listening to the RX100 drag race stories regaled by your uncle, there’s one thing that’s for sure — the RX100 is not just a motorcycle but a legend on two wheels.

If Yamaha pulls off a 2025 resurrection, we could see that legend roar back to life in India.
